Conference Highlights

PASSING THE TORCH

The Northeast Education Conference was a great experience.  We’re so glad to have welcomed attendees not only from New YorkState, but Pennsylvania and Massachusetts, also.

Truly, a highlight of the program was John Taylor Gatto’s two hour address.  We were treated to brand new material that will be included as a chapter in his upcoming book.  We were the first group to hear his new program.  I especially enjoyed the story of one of his students who ended up as an international speaker representing the USA.  CD’s and DVD’s will be available the PLA website starting mid June.

The Youth Conference enjoyed a number of highlights.  The tours of the church historical sites, watching The Testaments on a full screen, a fun dance, and, of course, wriggling through the spider web were all great.  They added to the wonderful spirit of the lessons taught by Ken Agle of Liken the Scriptures.  We’re really looking forward to putting together a full program with some of the actors from Liken for next year’s conference.  Dan Hunter’s talk on You! A Hero In the Making really pulled it all together at the Hill Cumorah.

It was great to have so many awesome materials made available by the attending vendors.  We had so many great tools to choose from.  Everyone seemed to enjoy being together in the one room and being able to have access to the venders throughout the conference.

Some of us got into a great colloquium on Friday night.  We were reviewing Ron Carter’s Book #8 in the Prelude to Glory series.  What a pleasure to be able to glean ideas from others who have such great love for their country and a desire to preserve our freedoms.  If anyone has a suggestion for a study book for next year’s colloquium, you can e-mail Cheryl at bcdowner@lds.net

The DVD sent by GeorgeWytheCollege was a great kickoff to the seminar series being brought to New YorkState.  Dr. Shanon Brooks will be in the Rochester area on May 25th.  He is offering a free introductory seminar as a prelude to bring the Face To Face with Greatness series to upstate New York this year.  Again, you can contact Cheryl if you would like more information.

It was a great opportunity to have our buckets refilled by wonderful speakers who prepared talks that helped us to stay focused on spiritual matters that affect our families.   We had our knowledge of the great heritage of our forefathers greatly expanded.  We also learned a lot about the impact that we can have on media producers and the obligation we have to encourage good media.  Many dots were connected that weekend.

If you special photos of the conference that you would like to have posted on the site, please send them to the webmaster.  Keep your eyes glued on the site for upcoming contests, activities and events for next year’s conference.  Mark the date:  April 18 and 19, 2008.

Thanks to all those who participated in making this first event go so smoothly!  If you would like to help with arrangements for next year, please e-mail the webmaster and a committee member will get back to you.

Have a great finish to your school year and we will see you in April 2008!
